Humanities

History and Geography form part of the College’s core curriculum. Students are presented with the opportunity to study periods and events of the past, as well as the geography and culture of the wider world. Furthermore, they are encouraged to utilise social science methodologies in their studies of past and present-day mankind, drawing links and gaining a ‘big picture’ perspective wherever possible.

The aim of this study area is to contribute to the student’s sense of identity and heritage, and to help them develop a clear view and understanding of their position in the global community.

History at Aitken College includes studies of Ancient, Medieval and Modern Australian History.

Geography, particularly in the junior years, focuses on building key geographical skills. This basis is then used to undertake a more analytical approach to the consideration of modern day issues faced by mankind, including various human struggles and tangible environmental concerns faced by our country and the world at large. As students move into the Senior School a Humanities elective program gives them the choice of a variety of more global and topical subjects to study. This serves to facilitate a focus on individual interests, and prepares students well for possible VCE studies in History or Geography.
